Different Types of Plastic Gemstones
Plastic gemstones or plastic stones are produced using different plastic materials. Common materials used in mass production are acrylic, polystyrene, a tree based resin, and epoxy. Following is a brief summary of their characteristics.

Acrylic Gemstones
Acrylic stones are made of PMMA. A material that offers the a very good combination of clarity, chemical resistance, and UV resistance. Acrylic is a hard plastic equivalent to Lucite and Plexiglass. There are different grades of resin and the best grades produce acrylic gemstones of a fine quality. Acrylic gems are very popular for this reason.

Polystyrene Gemstones
Polystyrene (PS) is a general purpose plastic material offering good clarity, but low heat and chemical resistance. Rhinestones and gemstones made of this damage easily when exposed to solvents or heat. PS gemstones offer lower cost.

Resin Gemstones
Rhinestones and gemstones made of this natural based resin can be stunning in appearance. Production begins by making a mold formed from a model. The material and manufacturing process has excellent fidelity in replicating detail. Chemical and heat resistance is excellent, but the resin lacks good UV stability and tends to yellow over time.

Epoxy Gemstones
Epoxy is used to make sheets of bling decorations. Because it is soft and flexible it can be die cut to different shapes or easily trimmed to size.
